Eleusis
The mystery (religion) cult which existed from 1400 B.C.
until 500 A.D. celebrating the grain mother, Demeter, and
her daughter, Persephone. A 8 or 9 day ceremony of many
parts including, purification in the sea, sacrifice, a joyful
14 mile process to Eleusis and a journey to the underworld
and back. For 55 days surrounding the event a truce was
observed - people came from all over to be initiated. This
was a celebration of the transition from innocence to knowledge.
A Puberty rite - although you need not be pubescent to participate.
An experience which eliminated the fear of death and guaranteed
fruitful fields and families if Demeter's rules were followed.
Was it the last great expression of the goddess (and women)
as powerful and sexual?
