Tim Hawkinson at UCSD
This is a new sculpture by Tim Hawkinson going up between the new Computer Science and CalIT buldings on the UCSD campus. What a contrast to the engineering feats being dreamed up in the buildings which frame the courtyard - stonehenge teddy bear!

I can't help thinking of Jeff Koons Puppy.............
The big boulder was delivered last night and already the bear has arms and legs. It's head is still lying on the ground. There is a very impressive assemblage of reinforcing bars and supports below. I assume concrete will be poured into the void underneath the sculpture. Kind of mysterious how the boulders are being fastened together - epoxy comes to mind. If anyone knows for sure, let me know. You can see the giant 'pin' on top that will support the head.

I love the maquette - it's so sweet.

I remember seeing the contraption "Drip" which beat out a rhythm with water on aluminum pie plates nested in buckets at Ace in Los Angeles. So schmo-tech.
The Tim Hawkinson show which is just finishing up at the Whitney (last day May 29th) will be at LACMA from June 26th to September 25, 2005.
