Art Life Death Wine and Microbes in San Diego

5.13.2005

Friday Night

Here's an image from Irene Lee's exhibition at Mandeville. The show consists of photos of the artist with strange, creepy sac-like breast and belly prosthetics, (actually pantyhose stuffed with rice) sometimes in water with fake blood (red fabric), sometimes not. An engaging depiction of a fetishistic obsession with pregnancy. The 'bathtub' in the middle of the room a reference to the 'birthing in water' scenes in the photos is an ambiguous and also quirky anchor around which the photos orbit.

And some from the University Art Gallery. Lots of folks on the way from the SunGod Party found the opening and were enjoying the wine and the snacks - not sure they went inside?? Hope so.........

Small stitches beginning at the head of this piece grow as they progress down the body, becoming balls of string.

I forgot to pick up a list of the artists - duh!

I'll have to go back for the details.
In the meantime - some pics.

This was part of a group - a table and chairs that were half european and half chinese in design. Each chair had a video screen in the seat showing a cloudy sky.
