I have been working on a series of paintings, sculptures and performances about denial and darkness. The image above is a transmogrification of a news image from the recent tsunami. The total destruction of the structure created by the state and by individuals, familes and other small scale associations of people is profound. But the engagement of the woman above in her world, as it is, searching through the debris for what? something of value? something to sustain? someone dear? is for me a distillation of the terror and the exquisite beauty of life.

The fear of being alone coupled with the fear of others is, I believe, the jumping off point for much human endeavour. Like the trunk of a tree, from which all manner of branches of humaness can develop. How we navigate the route is a fascinating distillation of our habits of mind, our strengths, our created beliefs and our ability to change. These things interest me. How do we know? In what ways do we know another? What can change? Why are some wedded to dogma and others free to roam the forest of possibilites the mind allows?
